When I climbed up his back to escape the pain, I accidentally dragged the tentacles up his back. (He was a US Marine, and we did lots with their family in the summer months.) He was then screaming, and I realized I was too. I felt a twitch, then searing pain bad enough I clawed my way up my dad's work buddy. We were wading to an island to go clamming. I was neck-deep in a water channel in North Carolina. I had one of them go right over my legs as a young child. Each zooid is more of an organism than an organ, but you could also consider, in a way, the whole colony to be an organism itself (composed of multiple individuals). Of course, the comparison is not 1 to 1 with what you'd see in a human. But since they're all connected they feed each other. Some do not have a mouth and serve as a floater. Now, in siphonophorans, this system became much more complex and zooids develop differently and specialize in tasks. Some species can reproduce when one the zooids splits from the rest and forms its own colony, so they each have their individuality. Each zooid, although connected to the rest of the colony, is a fully fledged individual with its own mouth and gut for example (the digestive system is often connected). This is maybe easier to imagine on something simpler like a coral (also cnidarians, like siphonophorans). I'm not a specialist of siphonophorans, so be mindful of that.Įach zooid is developing from the rest by budding.
